Natural pigments within Indian miniature painting

Natural pigments within Indian miniature painting vary from real gold & precious stones all the way down to bodily secretions such as cow ur!ne to make a pigment called Indian yellow. These minerals would be ground, pounded and filtered through different chemical and manual processes before they were deemed ready to use
.
Some pigments made from botanicals would take months to process in order for them to be deemed suitable for use. This is because these botanicals would also have components that would make the paints volatile therefore would take months to remove unwanted minerals. Many of the traditions of making natural pigments is being lost due to knowledge not being passed down as some required laborious processed which remain a secret to only a few artisans who know. These colours are becoming rarer to see, one such example is the pigment made from a chui mui ( touch me not ) flower

The history of Indian Miniature paintings

Works of miniature paintings can be dated back up to 9th century. These paintings were often illuminations to scriptures and Vedas on leaves, later moving to paper. The style we are familiar with today as miniatures originated from the Persian empire, as the artist migrated over during the invasion of India

Through the patronage of Mughal Emperor Akbar, the style you see was developed of highly details and almost realistic looking paintings which blended both Indian and Persian painting principles.

Asides from Mughal paintings many other branches of miniature paintings where developed over the centuries, which included:
. Bhasoli
. Kishangharh
. Pahari
. Kangra
.
Many other styles were developed over the years each having their own characteristics to make them identifiable. These paintings where made using natural pigments obtained from various plants, leaves, precious stones, secretions, earth, toxic minerals etc. Some pigments took months before they could be used to paint with
